Hi Gang

Here is a picture of my first airplane which was a T-Bird; I had approximately 200 hours on the plane before I "crashed" behind a house, luckily my injuries were minimal. Although I enjoyed the T-Bird, it does not compare to the fun I have with the Firestar II.

After 58 years of yearning, in April of 2003, I bought a Pterodactyl Pfledge, rented a shed from a farmer who didn't mind me using his driveway as a runway and proceeded to teach myself to fly.  That fall I bought a 1985 Quicksilver MX Super Acrobatic and taught myself to do loops, rolls, and fly upside down. The next summer I earned a BFI from a local CFI in San Antonio and bought a Kolb Twinstar MK1 with a bent wing & a busted axle. As I began repairing the wing, I kept going a little further, until I decided to do a complete rebuild, recover, and repaint. Now, 2 years later I have it all rebuilt, primered, and partially recovered, but WOW, there sure are a lotsa pieces and GOO! Compared to fixing Quicksilvers that is, which I have done plenty of. 

 I'm now flying a 2003 Quicksilver MXLII with a 582 and giving lessons to a few local enthusiasts.

 I started monitoring this list when I bought the Twinstar and have really enjoyed the knowledge, insight and chuckles it has given me every morning. Almost as good as a cup of coffee.

 OH, and thanks to all the old timer first flight stories, at 61, I feel like kid again.

Affectionately referred to the two place T-Bird at the Flight Farm, 

Monterey, NY, back in '88 and '89, as the flying anchor.  Never flew 

in it, but watched it fly a lot when I would be there to attend the 

annual flyins.

Russ: None of yer beeswax!  They weren't feth-hers, they wuz jes lef'  

over loose skin frum where Ah lost 10 ugly pounds.

John: Y'awl stop this here defamation, lessen Ah have Farmer Brown  

sic his cows onta yer machine, an' eat yer elevators off.



An' furthermore, Ah wuz pro-pelled by flappin mah lips. Gonna shoot  

off mah mouf fer Glorious Fourth of Jul.



Y'all be careful over the Fourth...Best seat in the house fer  

fireworks is a couple thousand feet (not available to FAR103 vehicles).

Been a great thread. 

  

   need to pick the 447 Firefly brains for a minute...

  

    Have about 3 or 4 hours on the bird over the last few days...  Today, I flew from home abt 21 miles to Portland Tenn and then on over to  Franklin Ky(where my EAA chapt is having a flyin on the 8th  with the first  80 chowing down for free..(slight donation requested for a cancer  charity..).   Then I flew back to a grass strip in Scottsville and on  to my strip at home..

  

    Used 3.05 gals and flew about 58 miles with 4 take offs and  landings.. EGTs stayed around 1100 at 5800 with chts at 320 to 350.  EGTS  seemed to climb toward 1200 from 5200 down to abt 4400..  60 inch, two  blade IVO, with most of the pitch removed..(prop cut down from 66 inches) . Saw  60 to 70 mph cruise.. Never opened her up except on climb out where I made abt  6300 rpms.  Steep climb out..   How does all of that  sound?   Thanks  Herb

  Thats very cool! Its interesting to see all the different vehicles we all first flew. I will check back for updates! One of the more interesting strings we have had a while... glad its back to being about flying...

 Update on first airplane plane info  first flew in a  Vector 627 SR 1994 after working all night putting it together I figured it was ready and so was I

 looks as though you have a really pretty set  up.

  

 We had a flat at Salcombe for a few years and loved  the area.

  

 Do you get to the Faraway Farm fly -in?  I  made it in the Challenger last year. May make it in the Kolb this  time.

 Thats the way to go Herb.

  

 I also had my first flight in  a glider.  A Slingsby T21c on 21st June 1964. Soloed 4 hours flying time later which  sounds good until you realise that I had done 54 flights by then.

 Soloed in a Grunau, a German high wing single place  open cockpit machine with a glide angle of about 16 to 1. Finished up in a  19metre span Jantar. plastic all singing hot ship which would do about 40  miles from 5000ft in a straight glide before it hit the ground.

  

 Tried hang gliding in the very early days and broke  my leg. When little engines were added I tried that and didn`t like the `weight  shift` control system. I could fly the thing OK but having to push instead of  pull to make the houses look smaller made it an accident waiting to happen for  my reflexes.

 Finally learned to fly ultralights in a Quicksilver  with some sort of tip hinged airflow deflector instead of ailerons, controlled  by loops of string. 

 Bought a Thruster, then built the Challenger in  91.

 Now the Kolb Extra with a Jabiru. Another hour  clocked up this morning in terrible viz and lumpy thermals.

  

 Wish I had the experience some of you chaps have  had.

Interesting how we Kolbers have met in the middle.  Some from the early

"real" ultralights and some from the "real" airplanes.  Pared it down to

a sensible size.  Now when I taxi past a C-172, the thing looks huge, 

like

a freight car with wings.  -And to  think people actually rented those 

things

to fly solo for a hamburger!  The SUVs of the air.

BB, drives a suzuki on the ground too.

My first solo was a Wizard 3 axis. One of those self thought pilots. Had  some real bad habits. I was at a flyin and a fellow pilot felt sorry for  me,let me show you how to land. Before that I was basicly flying into the ground  looked like a basketball bouncing down the runway.

 My first aircraft was a "standard Ragallo wing" an 18 ' Sky Sports Hang Glider. Manufactured by Tom Peginney who is still in aviation owning the company which produces the Flightstar, CT, and is the US distributor of the HKS engine.
