Our CJ-6 has either a broken or stuck air start valve - anyone with first hand repair/trouble shooting experience?
Normal start up with 40 atm's of air. Taxied out, secured the brake and began check list when it started creeping forward. Air indicated 0 and valve was full on (good reminder to never be pointed at another a/c or object during run-up!). Shut down & tugged back to the hanger.
Attached aux air, opened valve and air began to rapidly escape from the lower holes in the air start solenoid valve. Removed the unit and disassembled. The O-ring is good but I'm not sure how the rod and inner workings are supposed to operate. When I blow air into the middle air fitting it escapes regardless of where the rod/stopper is positioned.
Is there further disassembly possible? The solenoid assembly comes off, but the other end cap seems fixed.
Our resident "on-call" experts, Mr. Selby & Mr. Sapp are enjoying a weekend off-duty! Any suggestions?
Thanks, Dave

Well, not fixed but frozen with rust. Takes a big vise and a bigger wrench. The problem is common but I've never heard of an air start valve acting like this without first causing start problems.
Since the valve is installed "upside down", moisture will accumulate there and rust up the works. I have 2 different start valves and swap 'em out from time to time and OH as best I can. At maintenance time I'll load up the incoming air line (on the bottom) with air tool oil. Sooner or later the lower workings will wear out from me removing rust and then Doug will get a call for a new unit.

Dave,
The last time this happened to me, it turned out the insides of the valve were rusted up. You can try putting Mouse Milk in the valve and the holes in the sides. If its a Russian made valve, you can exercise the tab that is the manual start tab. If its a Chinese made, you can stick a standard screw driver in the square holes in the side which does the same as the tab.
If it is rusted up its best to replace it. I have had NO success repairing one. Keep it oiled with lots of WD-40 or better yet air tool oil.
