Sure...strip your engine down and Have Ram Performance rebuild it as a 150HP motor. I think the EA81 is quite a bit lighter than the EA 82 plus Ron is rightly getting an awesome reputaion for his work. A lot of this depends on the cost.

<![if !supportLists]>-          <![endif]>exactly – cost.  I have an EA-82 for free, and can rebuild it for cheap.  Then I get the heads and drive and that’s affordable for me.  Besides, I want that gear drive anyway for the Airmaster.  You’re right about the weight, that’s the downside.  He’ll be doing a 160HP turbo too but I’d rather stay away from that.

Autoflight??...I got a feeling that might be the drive that Ram provides in any case.

<![if !supportLists]>-          <![endif]>Yes, Ron was using the AutoFlight drive.  He also used Marcotte because that’s what Glenn Crowder has.  Tulsa Tom has a RAM engine with a Ross drive, and now I think Ron is using something else.  Anyway, AutoFlight is Neil Hintz who designed the SUB4 stuff.

Subject: oil dipstick
I’m a dipstick!  A friend that looked over my engine years ago before first flight recommended making some sort of keeper for the dipstick.  I never did.  The other day, I took a couple laps around the racetrack and smelt oil.  Landed and saw oil running down the side.  The dipstick came out and made a mess.  After checking, I realized that it was a lot easier to pull out than it used to be.  After two hours of cleaning, I made a lanyard for it.

Just a heads up if anyone is flying without a retainer for it.  Make one now!

Stratus for sale!  I’m buying a 140 HP AutoFlight EA-82.

In the mean time, I’m ordering an Airmaster and will try running it on the Stratus drive.  Any comments?

Now the big question...How does Autoflight install the valve guides in the EA 82? Would hate for you to have to go thru all the valve guide slippage pain all over again.

Not sure a core EA81 is very much money...I don't know for sure but if it was $200 would that influence your decision?....You could then have Ram do your machining (on one of his cores) with his very nice dowelled main bearing case, bored with head plate and heat shrunk stepped valve guides.

Then assemble the thing yourself using whatever performance goodies you like. This way you would be sure to get a very strong motor.

Having worked with Ram at length I have discovered there is a big difference between those who know what they are doing and those who say they do....Not disparing anyone, just that I KNOW that Ron does excellent work and having suffered three partial in flight engine failures I can say that a well made Soob conversion is worth every extra penny.
