Just a quick point in reference to the earlier discussion on homebuilt/OBAM
aircraft versus factory built, A&P maintained aircraft. My hangar mate, a
very experienced DAR with extensive manufacturing and spam can restoration
experience says he is regularly surprised at the high quality of work
performed by homebuilders of well known (read RV, Rocket, and similar)
kits. He is restoring a C-182 in our hangar right now (along with a couple
of C-172's and his own C-170) and as we pull floor boards and ribs (etc) to
fix corrosion problems and rivet in new metal, he says he is constantly
surprised at the relatively low quality of manufacturing work done by the
guys at the Cessna factory (and elsewhere). He says he almost invariably
sees better work (sometimes much better) in homebuilts. He sees lots of
smashed, poorly formed tails and shanked rivets (for example) that would
have been routinely rejected by most homebuilders.
My point is only that the recent discussion which worried about the quality
of homebuilder skills may be at least partly misplaced. The weak link for
most is knowledge, not skill or quality control and most builders are
capable, sucessful people who are usually motivated to research answers and
to ultimately do the right thing (witness the hundreds of builders and
support sites on the Internet). I suspect that the average workaday A&P
does not necessarily have the same level of motivation to complete
construction or maintenance tasks on your airplane any better than you
might. He may know more about it, but he may not be as inclined to
research thorny issues, remove and replace marginal work, dig deeper for
solutions to intractable problems, or take as much pride in his work---than
you. I think most of us can work on our own planes with no apologies
whatever, and, within reason, don't need an A&P on-site to help us do it
right. There is likely at least as much aviation construction and
maintenance experience resident, for example, in the typical EAA chapter as
there is at the typical FBO or aircraft maintenance hangar.
