On Sunday, it looks like my vacuum pump failed, AND I might benefit from having my RV-4 being IFR capable.  Thus, I am considering upgrading to an EFIS and Autopilot.  I am fishing for suggestions on this.  Having talked to several of you, I am swinging towards Blue Mountain Avionics.  Including the AP and remote compass, the cost is about the same as the Dynon and it seems to be somewhat better in many aspects (HITS, terrain, one less instrument, etc.)  However, I thought I would throw this question out to the group.

Any suggestions please?

Regards,
Paul D. Franzon

That's the same conclusion I reached. The dynon is a great contender but with ap and gps the blue mtn was my  choice.

Paul I also lean to the Blue Mountain but check out the GRT EFIS and compare the features.

Blue Mountain does have a good product, but… I have a G3 Lite. They announced the product but did not deliver any for 1 year. It had numerous bugs that had to be worked out in the field. The company did stick with me in working them out but I felt like one of their employees as we tested idea after idea. (Getting G3 to communicate with my Garmin 430—which they had already promised would work.) Their GPS does not allow a flight plan with multiple waypoints and I still don’t trust the AI IFR (It will occasionally tumble. Many others still report this same problem.). My Dynon on the other hand has been stable as a rock—and a much faster roll rate. Note that the G2 could not be upgraded to a G3 and the no G3 to G4, either. Check out their message board. (http://www.bluemountainavionics.com/talk/) It is informative. Right now if had it to do over again, I’d go with the Grand Rapids technologies, or maybe the new Advanced Flight Systems unit. (Wouldn’t trade in my Dynon, though.)

Paul,

I am planning to use the GRT Horizon Series with a TruTrak autopilot in the RV I am building now.
You can get some actual experience feedback from Ron Schreck on it as he has a dual display model in his RV8. They make a "Sport" Model that is less IFR oriented than their "Horizon" Series but the both "look" the same.

I would say "standby" until AFTER Oshkosh as I am sure there will be reports on the "latest".

Another thought on an EFIS;
I never really considered what it would take to update the database or firmware. My Garmin uses a memory card and it is very easy. The BMA requires a laptop at the airplane and proficiency with an FTP program. You also have to hook up a USB keyboard separately, all from the back of the unit! The Dynon uses a serial port/plug to the laptop at the plane as well, but their support program does all the transferring.
Just a thought…

From someone who is still trying to decide, how does the GRT unit get updated if you are using their GPS module?

Using one of those USB memory sticks.. you can run a little extension cable for the USB to the panel to make it a bit easier.

Or just build a tip-up and access it from behind.

PS.  My Dynon D100 EFIS arrived last week.  VERY cool.  I can only imagine what the HITS EFIS's are like to fly behind but since my -9 will be VFR only, I don't see the need.
