I own a 500 Shrike and I have an alternator problem. My right alternator keeps coming loose after about 3-5 hours of flight. We have tightened this atleast twice. Anyone have any suggestions as to what is causing this. The alternator is a rebuilt unit with the exception of the outer casing (might have worn bolt holes?). We also need a rebuilt attitude indicator. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As a general statement, when an alternator comes lose without apparent cause, your first suspect should be a failing bearing causing excessive vibration. If that’s the case and it’s not dealt with asap, the commentator might eventually rub against the outer coils (generator terms, might not apply to alternators but what the heck) and eventually rip the unit from its mountings in flight. A bench test would show whether there is vibration.

I was flying a Baron which has direct drive to the alternator, when that alternator seized it was pushed out of the engine case breaking the case and pouring all the oil out quickly, flew to destination on the other engine.
Small problems can lead to big ones in a hurry.

Check your prop and engine balance. Has there been any other work done when this started? Have you checked the alternator rotor for balance?
