But TIS coverage is not particularly wide-spread (especially out west where I live):

Here is a cheaper alternative ($500-$1800) with its own pluses and minuses:

$1795 is a reasonable price for Zaon unit, until you also consider that you still need a regular transponder as well at about $2000 bringing the total up to $3795. I would still opt for the Garmin 396 with the GTX-330 for a couple hundred more.

But the Zaon units will work where there is no TIS radar coverage. And you can spend $500 instead of $1800 if you can live with distance but no bearing information.
