I had an engineer look at the remains of the pushrod to see if he had any
ideas why it broke. It took hem about 30 sec with a microscope to say that
it was not heat treated properly when it was made. it was way to hard for
the intended purpose.

Have you ascertained if it is a std Subaru part or after market? Not like Sub to get it wrong..

It was a factory part. The engineer ( who does contract work for GM ) said that sometimes a part will miss a step in the manufacturing process and he suspects that is what happened here.
