There has been a lot of talk about first flights--- what about early projects? I just got a new scanner today and have been messing around with it and thought you all might like to see some old projects. I know some of you guys had Hummers like Richard Pike. I built 3 hummers in 78 to 80 I flew Clouse Hills original hummer and talked to Dom Williams to day he still has it. Back then I put a gear reduction a friend and I made with a 3 to 1 reduction turning a 54’ prop. We had a Polaris engine on the second hummer and it flew like a dream. The 3rd hummer I built I got ailerons from a drifter made a mixer to keep the v tail. <![endif]--><![if !vml]>[img]cid:image002.jpg(at)01C6ADC8.BDA2DEF0[/img]<![endif]>Here is a picture of my 4th airplane project, it has a welded frame the back is cable braced the turtle deck and mid top is mahogany the engine cowling is engine turned aluminum, the fuse is covered with seconite ( can’t remember how to spell it) it had an industrial Koler 65HP water cooled engine with one of the aforementioned reduction units. Instead of ailerons I used wing warping, man lots of stick pressure! the prop in the picture is an aqua prop the wheel hubs were from a moped with 24in bicycle rims laced to them. I engineered built and test flew this project there were no plans or kit.

Very neat little bird, your flair for sharp designs was showing up even
then. Is that a Hummer wing structure and kingpost? My Hummer had
spoilers, which were fine for flying, but were no help landing in a
crosswind. I had a chance to fly my old Hummer several years ago, and
was amazed at how far we have come. At one time I thought it was great,
and compared to what was around at the time, it was fairly good. Which
isn't saying much, compared to the control authority of a Kolb.

Yes it was a hummer wing with different tips the first time I flew it
there was about a 20 knot cross wind the warping worked well. The old
wing was only good for about 65 mph she made about as much drag as lift
