Think that message was for somebody named Morris.
BUT also the more things change, the more they remain the same.

Yup, Morris code.

Named for Samuel F. B. ("fine business") Morris.

We all had to learn it to ID the VOR stations, right?  Now they print the dits and dahs on the sectional, allowing "no-code" technicians (airplane drivers) to fly without having to do all that memorization.  That's someone's idea of progress, no doubt.

[quote] FYI, there is a Flying Hams group at Yahoo.  I've been a member for a few weeks; definitely not much happening there, but maybe it's the start of something.

If the hams in this thread sign up, membership will nearly double Smile

Piffle.  All this high tech VOR/morse code nonsense - If we were *real* pilots we'd go back to the A/N range.

Never happen.  You'd be asking pilots to memorize two letters of Morse and have their lives depend on not getting them mixed up anywhere along the approach course Smile

My earlier "no code" comments were, of course, a tongue-in-cheel reference to a controversey that was once swirling in ham radio circles and has now been laid to rest for us by the powers than be.

Being a ham and a pilot, I remember that when the government closed the Coast Guard station at 500 KHz, that they were supposed to be completely out of the International Morse code business.  I guess they forgot about the VOR and VLF beacon IDers.

By the way did you know that about 1 out of 600 Americans is a pilot, and about 1 out of 600 Americans is a ham?  Now, how many are both?  I don't know.
