Hello Mike,

In order to become a ... 7% pilot Smile I need to ask you a question. Do
your flaps really give you added drag? My very subjective perception is
this: When I fly an airliner and the flaps are deployed, I can feel a
slight deceleration that I attribute (maybe wrongly) to the added drag.
With my Kitfox that has full flaps limited to only degrees by the
builder, I notice an added lift but no drag.

Lift is good when I want to get quickly away from the runway, but ...
does it help when landing? Of course, it should reduce my stall speed
by a few knots but is that worth the probable loss of bank control?

When I land, of course I try to do it right on the spot with idle
engine. If I am too short and have to add a tad of throttle, I always
feel it like a defeat for my -dimensional perception. So, most often,
I am a bit too high from the perfect glide slope and I use side slip to
pull the nose down without gaining too much speed. If I could achieve
the same with flaps, I surely would.

Do you think I should modify my flaps settings and allow for e.g. up to
2 degrees?

Cheers,
Michel

I doubt you would notice the very slight additional drag from 10
degrees which, on my IV, was 1/2 flaps. Full flaps, 22 degrees, made
a more noticeable difference.

I am not an expert on the proper rigging of the flaperons for a model
III. If Mr. McBean is following this thread perhaps he knows off the
top of his head what the proper full-deflection angle is. Otherwise,
I'll check with Murle for you. I would definitely rig them per the
factory's recommendation.

P.S. As for your original question... Smile In my opinion, slipping
on final approach is quite safe, provided that you carefully manage
your airspeed. Nearly every flight instructor I've flown with has
had me demonstrate at least one slip in this manner. It usually
starts off with, "Let's do this one without flaps..."

When I got my model III-A the flaperons were set so that a deflection of the
ailerons would cause the flaperon setting to reduce to about half. I
thought that was probably putting unnecessary stress on the mixing box so I
adjusted the flaperon so it would just start to reduce the flaperon setting
with full aileron deflection.

The results of this adjustment were: the flaperons can now be used as a
slight attitude adjuster... The nose goes up slightly with flaperons fully
retracted. As for the use of the flaps I noticed no difference at all.

Noel, just wondering what a model III-A signifies. The A is a new one on
me.

As far as I know The original builder told me that the "A" was basically an
up graded model II. I think Steve Winder of Airdale told me it was a model
III with a narrower fuselage. My plane doesn't have the panel tank. It has
drooped wing tips, wing tanks and the 582. The 912 was an option. I have
installed a nitrogen lift strut on the pilot side. The original builder
installed a small baggage compartment behind the seats which is accessible
from the outside. I have heard that some avid owners have a problem with
folding their wings. Apparently they have to disconnect the aileron push
rods...or install bent ones. I have no such problems.

The 'Fox is a he#$ of a lot more fun to fly than the spam can C172M I
trained on... And that's on floats! One of these years I might actually get
to try the skis or wheels.
