OK: after thinking about this for a while (all day) several things came to
mind. One is the L-31s taking off. What a noisy, interesting, fun
distraction. Obviously, most everyone was watching them take off and were
distracted; they are loud and hard to ignore, especially a formation
departure. The Walter Mitty in us all. We sometimes do that in our RVs, just
not so loudly. Maybe that was a factor. Many of the pilots in line on the
taxi way were probably also watching them go. Losing situational awareness.
We have all been there.

When I find myself not doing things the way I would like, it is usually when
I am being distracted, not following my usual and customary routine.
Example: my GPS temporarily bit the dust about half way to OSH. Nothing
worked, including the VNAV I use to get to pattern altitude at a reasonable
time. I also rely on the GPS to tell me what runways are at my destination
(that routine may change now) at an already sort of familiar airport. SO: I
thought I remember it being 14, so got on downwind and mumbled 'Suzie Q on
left downwind for kfjaawoiehhr, full stop.' I then was able to see the
number and base leg, and didn't mumble it (there was no other traffic to
listen for the active). Half flaps on downwind, full on base, landing speed
established on the "rail", land. I have a little green light I turn on when
I am in my landing configuration, similar to a 'gear down and locked' light,
just to confirm I have done everything on the landing check list and am
ready to land. (OK: a little obsessive compulsive, but it works for me...)
After I landed, I looked down and the light was not on. Neither was the fuel
pump nor the carb heat. I was amazed and felt momentarily slightly
inadequate. Good thing my gear is down and welded. Doesn't happen very often
but just that series of (simple) distractions was enough for a
inconsequential bit of forgetfulness.

I find I am most distracted when with a passenger, so I am extra vigilant
(there's that word again), making sure I am paying attention to those
critical things. I occasionally will tell my passenger 'wait a minute. I
need to do some stuff here for a little while' to let them know I may be
ignoring them for a while and doing 'pilot things'.

PAY ATTENTION. Be HERE now.

Nuff said.
