Just the opposite opinion here:  I'd never paint them.  Try looking for someone who does hard industrial chroming, like the hydraulic folks in the Yellow Pages.

Mine has held nicely on three gear legs (HDS) for four years.

Jeff,
I do appreciate your opinion and was concerned about chroming becoming a
cause for imbrittlement and possibly losing a gear plate
at the strut welds. Epoxy paint properly applied would probably do as
nice a job at the bearings for me, but plating seemed a bit risky.
I haven't changed the thickness of my gear plates yet and we've lost a
few to the plate thickness at the welds.

Jeff and Larry,
I shared your concern about the gear plates after reading of several
that separated from early 601s. My solution was to weld a triangular
gusset to front and back of the strut to plate junction. It increases
the welded area a lot and hopefully will prevent a problem from
occuring. I am enclosing two shots of my fix. Hopefully the pix aren't
too large for dialup users, but the detail may be helpful.
The fix isn't hard but removing the gear assembly from the wings is a
pain in the &$(&#*. Don't plan on doing it again any time soon.

I had my rudder pedals, steps and gear leg chromed
last February and I really like the results. Before:

After:

http://www.cooknwithgas.com/2_19_05_Pedals.jpg

I did make the gear plate slightly thicker. It has
held up well for over a year now with hundreds of
trips in and out of the garage (that was a joke).

I got the idea from seeing Jeff Small's airplane a few
years ago - Jeff has the nicest 601 I've ever seen in
person.

I paid just under $100 for all of the parts in that
box. Here's a tip - if you want it to be really shiny
and smooth, polish up the metal before bringing it to
the chrome place. They charge more for polishing. I
told them not to polish mine and I still like the way
it looks.

Scott, Jeff and Ron,
I really do like the chromed appearance, but I still sport the larger
wheel/tire combination and on landing/braking and turning the larger
diameter tires and wheels put considerable more stress on thin gear
strut plates. I've saved the images of Ron's gusset approach and
consider it a really solid solution which could possibly be chromed
after. Will look closer as painting progresses. Thanks for the
ideas.

Correction to my last post-- It was Jim Olson's HD that lost a gear leg
and not Jim Pellen.

Another 2 cents.....

My gear legs were originally powder coated. I WOULD NOT recommend powder coating gear legs. The powder coating on my gear legs added significant thickness, did not wear as well as I expected, and was not as uniform as the original surface. My gear had significant stiction (initial resistance to move, term frequently used when discussing motorcycle forks).

I believe the powder coating may have contributed to my gear leg failure on 12/16/04. I had 318 hours and 405 landings at the time. My replacement main gear legs have a extra supports added (see picture) and were hard chromed. I also added Nyoil bearings, from Zenith, at the top and bottom of all three gear legs when I did the repairs. The replacement gear operates more smoothly than my original gear.

My failed gear leg looked very much like the picture Tim Perkins posted. So much in fact that I checked my pictures to see if Tim had some how posted a picture of my gear!

Regards,

Roy
