I was asked the other day by a neighbor if this airplane (-9) would fly
without the slider canopy on the plane. I don't know! Anybody got
opinions or facts about whether the plane would even be controllable without
the slider section of canopy on the plane.

I've seen a 6a fly without the canopy on. He said it was too windy and
noisy to do it again.

Vans seems to intimate that RV-4's have flown0without canopies in their advertisement for a "canopy lock." Seems that I remember someone stating that the canopy would depart without any problem regarding the empanage.
Just running up the engine to taxi with my tilt canopy open on the Rocket, would blow my headset and hat off into the back seat. I don't want to experience the direct blast of air without a canopy. Especially below about 50F.
Hey, Gummybear, didn't some folks fly home in0F-100's and F-4's etc. without the canopy?
Ya'll be careful out there, Les

Les,
My backseater lost his canopy on takeoff roll once. He0 claims it was windy put I knew he was OK, when I could see him stick his hand0 out into the wind and play with the air. I kept the speed down in the0 200-250 knot range, while we burned down enough gas to safely land. Of0 course, as the pilot, the bird colonel DO yelled at me. 0
For the front seater, the first part of the canopy was fixed,0 so if the canopy was lost, you could duck down and have a wind0 break.

There was at least one RV4 sportster built with an open cockpit. It had the
back seat covered with a modified turtledeck that came right up behind the
pilots head. Pretty cool, but probably too fast for an open cockpit
plane....

I kind of misunderstood the question. I thought you were referring to inadvertent loss of the canopy rather than purposeful departure without it.
I have flown a good deal of open/no cockpit airplanes, and I would defer to the experienced motorcyclists on the list as to what max speed is0comfortable, and what is too fast. My feeling is over 70 without a windscreen is getting pretty fast, and over 85-95 (ie Skybolt, Pitts) with a w/s is getting on the edge. And that is with safe head and face protection.
Them bugs start to hit danged hard.
Let us know how the flight goes........................
Les
PS Good report Gummybear!

I guess with that, is it a slider or tip up. with a slider you have somewhat of a shield up front.

I lost a tip-over canopy (no windshield) on a full scale plastic replica of a P-51 with a T-53 Lycoming Turbine. I was at about 185 kias when it came off. I flew about 5 miles back to the airport and landed. I had to add some power on downwind/ base and the helmet nearly tore my head off. It was the most physically demanding thing I have ever done in my life!!!!
The visor was ripped off my helmet, but the helmet kept my glasses on my face and protected my eyes. Without them I doubt I could have done it.
We found the canopy on the roof of a building, buffed out the scratches, glued the hinges on again and 24 hours later, we were flying again. With a safety latch.
There was a harmonic in the latch lever. The lever vibrated and came unlatched again while I was being photographed on the East side of Lake Winnebago at OSH and it was a long scary trip back to OSH, but the safety latch held.
I would not recommend it. Latch your canopy and check it twice!
I like the fixed windscreen on the Rocket!

That's absolutely amazing! And to find the canopy
almost unharmed...
I'm glad you were able to return safe.

If you plan a cross-country cruise in even a moderately powered RV-8
without a canopy, I suggest a very good GPS and electronic Jepp plates .
. . 'cause you'll never be able to unfold a sectional map.
I asked Danny King from Texas this same question some time back when our
California Central Valley summer temperatures were hovering over 100
degrees. He wisely told me to quit day dreaming and get back to
building.
