Dear Yak List readers,
I have written an "off line" email to POTUS Stephen Fox
explaining to him my feeling that "on the list" was an appropriate
forum for my response to Mr. Haertlein.
Mr. Haertlein, if you recall, posted a message on this esteemed
list, that I judged to be unfairly critical of what I personally know
to have been a totally selfless effort on the part of a really good
guy to provide some nice photos to whoever wanted them. Since, like
most of us, this "really good guy" works for a living (active duty,
United States Navy) and has to watch his money, he attempted to offer
these photos in a manner that would, perhaps, eventually cover his
actual costs.
Obviously, for whatever unknown reason, Mr. Haertlein found
this very offensive and complained about it in this public forum.
Which is, of course, certainly his right. Not good judgement
perhaps, but certainly his right.
I think it was appropriate for me to respond in defense of the
"really good guy" in the same venue in which he was attacked. I
further think that it is appropriate for me to respond to Mr.
Haertlein's self serving, disingenuous attempt at self defense in
this same place.
So here goes......Mr. Haertlein, your pious mewling about how
wonderfully you provide essential information to save the lives of
the Yak List subscribers...all "free of charge" is irrelevant to this
discussion. That's what all of us do in reference to safety,
maintenance items, operational issues, etc. That is why this list
exists...and we all strive to do this for our fellow aviators...and
all, as you put it, "free of charge". Learning about these issues
may have cost one dearly, but sharing such information costs
nothing. It is, indeed, a responsibility.
However, for Brandon (the "really good guy") to share the
photos in the form of prints does cost him money that he shouldn't be
expected to have to spend to do so.
The essence of the "discussion" is that Brandon (the "really
good guy") was simply trying to do something good for members of the
Yak/CJ flying fraternity....without going broke doing so. Since the
photos in question were not of you, or of your airplane, or of
anything in which you were involved; I don't see you as wanting
copies of any of the photos and I can't see where your opinion of any
aspect of this activity is relevant.
I saw your posting on the list as inappropriate, uninformed,
inane and insulting. You certainly owe Brandon (the "really good
guy") an aplology.
Listers, that's all I shall have to say to Mr. Haertlein.
Everytime I get involved in something like this, I promise
myself I'll not do so again because I'm reminded of the futility of
wrestling with a pig. All one gets out of it is to be covered with
mud and pig dung, and the pig probably enjoys it.
