I'm wondering if there are any opinions out there as to the
effectiveness of the various breather tube oil separators that are
available. I've got a Lycoming IO-540 and it has a 1-inch breather
line, but most of the systems for sale have only a 3/4-inch inlet
fitting.

Hey, Gary: There have been a BUNCH of posts regarding this very issue
recently on the RV list. It has also been discussed previous to this, so
the RV archives should be pretty full of opinions. The general consensus
seems to be NOT to put a separator on, especially the bigger vented engines
because of the discrepancy in the breather outlet and the separator
inlet/outlets, as that causes increased crank case pressure which increases
oil leaks as that pressure searches for an escape route.
YMMV, however. I have one but my in-hole matches the out-hole on my O-320.
Does it seem to make much difference? Not sure. There is still junk on the
belly, but maybe not as much as would be without it.

Check out Airwolf. They bought out the Walker line of separators and it
looks like they have a size for anything thru the large radials. I saw
one at their Oshkosh display that had dual inch-plus fittings. They're
not cheap though, $495 for my GO-480. I've got a small Beech separator
now connected just to my wet vacuum pump. But I've got leak issues to
solve before I can really tell if I need a more effective separator.

Hi Gary,
The absolute best is an inverted oil system vent tank. Go to
Ravenaircraft.com, they are cheaper than Christen.
