NTSB Identification: ANC99LA101 .
The docket is stored in the0 Docket Management System (DMS). Please contact Records Management Division0
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Saturday, July 31,0 1999 in ANCHORAGE, AK
Probable Cause Approval Date: 1/18/2001
Aircraft:0 Haering Avid Flyer AVID FLYER, registration: N511AF
Injuries: 10 Uninjured.
The solo commercial pilot reported that during cruise flight the engine began0 to run rough, and lose power. He noted that for a short time, he was able to0 restore partial engine power by actuating the engine fuel primer. While0 attempting to land on a small, private airstrip, all engine power was lost, and0 the airplane collided with a stand of trees. An examination of the interior of0 the fiberglass fuel tanks revealed delamination of the resin material within the0 tank, and both main fuel tank outlets were blocked with a brown, plastic-like0 material. Examination of both in-line wing fuel filters revealed the presence of0 the same material found in the main fuel tanks. The pilot/owner stated that in0 the past, he had operated the airplane for about 40 hours using an alcohol based0 fuel. AVID Aircraft service letter number 03, dated 5/91, covering all AVID0 Flyer models, stipulates that a placard be placed near the filler neck stating,0 in part: 'NO ALCOHOL BLENDED FUELS. These fuels may cause deterioration of the0 fiberglass tanks or carburetor parts.' The pilot/owner stated that since he has0 owned the airplane, he has not received any warnings or directives concerning0 the use of alcohol based fuels directly from the manufacture of the airplane0 kit, AVID Aircraft, Inc.0
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of0 this accident as follows: A loss of engine power due to blockage of the0 airplane fuel system, a delamination of the fiberglass fuel tanks, and the usage0 of an improper fuel. A factor associated with the accident was the failure of0 the kit manufacturer to inform the pilot/owner against the usage of alcohol0 based fuel.0
