As many of you may know, I haven't had a plane with a VOR since 1995. I hate the damn things. So, when ever I need to deliver a plane without a GPS, I take along my trusty Garmin 90 handheld. It's circa 1995 also. Data base expired in Sept that year.
Monday, I delivered a Cheetah back to it's customer in Novato. Normally, that's a 40 minute flight from Auburn. No GPS on board, so I brought my G90. As luck would have it, they identifier for Novato has changed since '95. No biggy, I'd get close enough and I'd see the airport. There is an airport not far from Novato that had a 3-letter my G90 recognized. However, when I got there, I couldn't find Novato. I turned on the VORs and had to find Novato by waiting for needles to swing. I was chuckling the whole way. VORs: what a hap hazzard way to navigate.
Had that failed, I was prepared to follow Highway 101 to the airport.
