recent threads discussed state use/sales tax on homebuilt aircraft. obviously utah monitors the faa registration. tax plus interest from the date registration was issued has been assessed. they have assigned a fair market value of $56,900 on the RV9. The tax levied is $3470.90.
it probably is not worth haggling over the fmv but raising the date from which interest is assessed might be worth a few pennies.

What!? You have to pay 6%/year just to own your airplane? Yikes. My state (SC) has a personal property tax but it never occured to me that it might cover airplanes. I'll sell the damn thing and switch to an ultralight before I pay them 6% though.

Wingnut,
The sales and use tax is a one time deal in Utah and many other states. Utah happens to be at 6% to 6.5% depending on the county in which the airplane is registered. Property tax however, is a yearly deal and it also depends on the county where the airplane is registered. Where I live it is .04%, so a fox will cost around $75 to $100 per year to register with the state...more than I want to pay but not that bad. The sales tax thing kinda sucks though since many surrounding states such as Montana and Nevada don't have sales tax at all.

Michigan annual registration tax is 1 percent of the gross weight or $15.50
for a model 5 with 1550 gross. This pays for the little sticker they make
you stick on the tail. I don't mind paying it, but good things never seem
to last very long.
Sales and use tax is one time payment of 6 percent of whatever you tell them
the airplane is worth.

South Carolina will put tears in your eyes when you find out how they value your plane and if the city that you live in has a city tax, like Summerville does, they want that too. When I licensed my Kitfox the Auditors Office called and wanted a value because they had no book, (They raped me with the book on my Bonanza.) I told them it had no value because the legal definition of value is what a willing buyer and seller will exchange an item for and I wasn't ever planning on selling because of liability issues. We batted all that around for a bit and of course we all know that's a losing battle, but I ended it with the statement that I realize that everybody needs to pay their fair share, but if you get carried away, I'll put both of them in a Delaware Corporqation and you'll never see a cent. Well, when trhe tax notices came out they wanted $1700 a year for my 1957 H35 Bonanza and about $950 for the Kitfox. That was 1995 and I have since paid about $150 a year for taxes and administration charges for a Delaware Corporation which now owns both planes with A Dover, Delaware address, and I own the Corporation. It only cost about $300 to set up the Corporation.

Now there's the right answer. It's unbelievable to me that I should pay $950/year in taxes for the privilege of owning a toy that I park in my back yard and never touches a state road.
Glad I misunderstood the original post in this thread.

No, this is a one-time "sales" tax levy.

When KY tax people tried to say my old van was worth
$6000 and I said it was worth $4000, I found a
solution. I offered it to the tax lady for $5000 and
said then we could both make $1000 on it, if she was
right.... No sale. She lowered the value to $4000.
Ask the tax assesser what they would be willing to pay
you for your "home built" plane and see what happens.
Sales tax is probably going to be based upon what you
paid for the parts, but market value after that is a
point to argue.
