OK, all you HD and HDS builders,0 how many clecos does it really take to build through the fuselage stage? I0 finally get back to work on the project this weekend after nearly a 5 month0 layoff building the garanger, (I'm only a month off schedule!!) and my cleco0 cans are pretty low.
If I leave off riveting the0 center wing per the manual until later, I'm out a pile0 of clecos. But, thanks to the benefits of painful experience, I0 realize spending $100 on clecos is better than God knows how much time and money0 rebuilding a warped Center Wing. The puppy's nearly perfect, and at this point I'm pretty gun-shy.

Bill,

At our Basic Sheet Metal Workshop at SunNFun we0 teach that Clecoes alone don't completely hold critical structures in0 alighnment. I always urge builders to use at least a few critically located0 clamps to maintain important alighnment. This is true especially after all0 deburring and prep is complete and riveting is about to begin. If your have a0 wing laying on a table with clecoes in every other hole, I can lift one corner0 of the wing off the table if your firmly hold the oppisite corner. Ask me how I0 know that you can build a warped wing this way!

With proper clamping, you can remove many of the0 clecoes and use them elsewhere in your construction process. Of course there is0 nothing wrong with having a clecoe in every other hole when you are riveting,0 but if the structure isn't properly aligned AND CLAMPED it will come out warped.0 Again, ask me how I know!

Good luck and build straight!

Remember Bill, a can full of clecos is like money0 in the bank. They hold their value pretty well, and there is always0 another needy builder coming along.

Jim
Without discussing how I know, I completely agree that you can build a0 twisted wing if you trust the clecos. I am curious about what you did about0it0 afterward.

Carroll,

Long story short, I got ZAC to send me another wing kit0 without the spar attach holes drilled. I match drilled the attach holes0 using a locally made drill bushing. Also paid very close attention when building0 the second wing. Built it in two weeks! There is much more to the story but0 I'll not bore everyone here with it.

As for the warped wing, being lazy as I am, it is0 still stored in my basement, painted and all. All I've got to do is remove the0 rivets, replace the ribs and reassemble. I probably would have to upsize a0 few rivets in the rear spar at the outboard end. It's only been ten years ,0 but I do hope to get to it some day, if I live long enough!

If you want all the gory details of how I built the0 warped wing and how I built a nice straight wing the second time contact me off0 line directly and I'll share the whole story with you.
