Greetings, Lurking for some time. My partner and I are finishing a 701 (paint drying as we speak). Firewall plumbed for 912S along with a mount. To make a long story short -- while I was at Oshkosh, I sat across from 2 gentlemen talking to an engineer from what I believe was CT. They were talking about a new lightweight diesel made in the U.S. that was smaller in physical size than the 912S and had better fuel consumption than the 914. The only downside was the weight was 179# with comparable 912S accessories. Full FADEC control. It is suppose to be installed in a 701 by September and flying it's 40 hrs. off by sometime in October. I am trying to find anyone who knows something about Vulcan Aircraft Engines, Inc.

Thanks in advance,

Bob West lsabuilder(at)yahoo.com (lsabuilder(at)yahoo.com)

Do you know if it's an auto gas diesel or a Jet-A like the new Diamonds have?

Sorry, I don't have the information you are seeking. However, I have been thinking about using a Diesel in my LSA for some time. I would like to make a comment or two.

First, I think the Diesel engine is ideal for an airplane. It likes to run at a constant RPM - just like the way we fly our planes. It also runs on nearly any fuel including filtered restaurant frying grease.

The down side is the fact that the small airports we tend to frequent don't offer fuel for this type of engine. You would have to tote the fuel to your airport and load it into your plane for each flight. This is more of a problem when on a trip. In that case you are just plain stuck. This is a similar problem for the people who run on auto gas at home but can't really get it while travelling.

You can use jet fuel in a diesel, but I think operating a 701 into the large fields needed by jets might be a bit cumbersome. You would also probably get a sour face from the jet fuel truck operator when he learns he needs to figure out how to pump you 3 or 4 gallons of fuel to top off your plane.

John,
I do remember them saying it could use #2 diesel, jet A, JP-8 ??, and bio-diesel if it has the correct lubricity.
