I too built my work table from laminated I-beams0 and I was very satisfied with the result. I used two 120 foot beams for the longitudinal members and a third for the end members and0 center cross member. I think I only had two inches of overhang on the0 top. Using some of the packing crate plywood, I made a small shelf and0 attached it to the lower edge of the longitudinal beams to hold small tools,0 drill bits, Sharpie markers etc.

Each leg was made from two pieces of 3/40 plywood screwed to a 2x2. I used threaded inserts on the foot of the legs0 with bolts for leveling. I thought that I would need a leg at the midpoint0 of the longitudinal beams, but the beams didn't sag in the middle at0 all. Most of the assembly was done using the drywall screws from the0 packing crate.

The work surface was two pieces of 3/4 plywood0 spliced on the center cross member. I laid out a centerline and several0 cross reference lines with a Sharpie marker to help in lining up large0 structural assemblies. A 50 by 50mm grid would have been even0 better.

Best of all, when it came time to set the fuselage0 down on the gear I sold the table to another homebuilder for most of what I had0 invested.

George

Thanks for reminding me that Spellcheck doesn't catch all my proofreading
sloppiness. If I only did have that big shop!
