I have heard of Sergio’s “sight gauge” or see through cover that goes on the nose case of the M14 but have never seen any with it installed. Some where just talking about it over on the YAK list.
The way I understand it (??) the clear cover replaces the cap on the nose case of the Series 2, M14P’s that have the option to install an external oil centrifuge (if you have electric start this would be covered I believe). You then have a mark on the gear in there that lets you know when the crankshaft is stopped with the connecting rod journal in the upper most position. I believe the theory being that oil will not get into the crank and run down to the lower cylinders. There seems to be various oil passages and then there is the “oil jet” that if stopped in the up position wouldn’t let oil leak out.
I am wondering what the see through cover would need to be made of and if there is much pressure in that part of the nose case (I don’t think so)?
One thing I have noticed is sometimes I can sit for days and get almost no oil and others I can get considerable (and I do have the clean kit and sump pump out) – usually it comes out of the right exhaust stack. Just wondering if by pure dumb luck the crank is stopping in the up position on the days I get nothing and if this is something worth looking into further.
