I finally took to the skies this morning with a (as seems to be the
standard) very uneventful flight. The #1 CHT got warmer than I'd like so I
didn't keep the power as high as I planned, but otherwise it flew great!
Lots of spectators and encouragement from family and the squadron mates so
that made it that much more exciting.
One question for the group regarding the high CHT. I know it will drop as
the engine breaks in some, but I have the standard kit baffle that covers
the leading edge of the cylinder (on both sides). It seems that reducing
the size some would help but I'd be open to ideas before I start hacking
away at it. The other temps were within reason (<400 with #1 pushing 435
and slightly above momentarily) so I'm hesitant to make any huge changes to
the rest of the baffling or cowling without further data.
Thanks for all the help on-line, especially Tim Olsen, the process would
have taken a whole lot longer had I worked in a vacuum of information.

Don't hack! That 'fence' forces the air to go down vertically through
|
the fins. If you hack it off, the airflow will go up and over the
cylinder providing no cooling.

That's awesome Marcus! My wife was just reminding me that today
was your day, so we were waiting for the news. Yes, I did trim
my baffles (in front of the cylinders) down. One at least 3/8"
and one about 1/4". I may actually trim them another 1/4" to
3/8" on both sides yet. It did help the temps, as 1&2 were the
hot ones on those first flights before cutting them. I do know
that Vic removed his completely on his -10 and he's having luck
with that too, so I wouldn't worry too much about trimming them
back a little. When tall, they cut off most of the flow to the
front of those cylinders.
Glad to hear it was uneventful. Nothing worse than an
eventful first flight, huh?

Congratulations Marcus. I'm sure you must be on cloud nine having completed your first flight successfully. Good luck in your 40 hour fly off.

I also trimed the baffles on one and two.It helped quite a bit they still run a little hotter than I would like and I adjust climbout accordingly.I ordered a Sam James plenum and will report the results. When OAT"s are in the 90"s #1 will hit 425 at a climbout of 120kts.Also Alex De dominicis developed louvres which he reports lowers chts quite a bit. This brought me a couple of questions...
1) Do you have a regular or Sam James cowl, that you're going
to fit the plenum into?
2) Can you describe the louvres at all, like where they're placed
and what they look like?

Tim,
Alex has pictures of his 10 with the louvers installed. Not sure how he
installed them but believe he used RTV and pop rivets because of the
honeycomb cowling.

I guess with all the success stories showing up about trimming the baffles ..... go ahead and trim. If you're still having high temps, take a look down through the fins around the spark plug .....some cylinders have flashing that closes off the air passage. A drop light in the lower cowl will help a lot. Patience and a jewelers file will open them up, although I've seen some flashing so thick that a drill bit was used.

I had the same high temps on my #1 and #2 cylinders during the
flyoff period. The weekend we did the flyoff it was 98 - 102 on the
ground. I started by cutting down the front baffles a 1/2" at a time.
It was getting better each time, but in the end, I had to remove the
front baffle plate completely on both #1 and #2 cylinder. Temps are
real close now with the hot weather in Kansas.
Thank You
