HI Guys, I seem to have a real problem with the ignition CDI's on my NSI. I have absolutely no spark at all and suspect that both black boxes have finally succumbed to the salt water they were sitting in for several hours when we had our unscheduled swim at Christmas time.. Has anyone ever changed these CDI ignition systems to a conventional distributor and coil?. I have heard that the traditional Subaru distributor can be retro fitted with dual points. If this is correct it might be a sensible alternative for me to consider due to the NSI replacement CDI's being no longer available. My engine is the standard NSI EA 81 non turbo and there is still provision on the engine to fit a distributor. Any comments would be appreciated as I don't want to be out of the air for another 6 months. Im just starting to have fun again. Thanks guys.
Regards
Graeme

Graeme, it's very possible that the salt water got in them and corroded things
up. Probably not much left of them. Too bad about that.
As for replacements, you might try contacting Mikal Templeman at Stratus to see
what ignition he's using. I'm sure his would work fine on your engine.
Stay with me and I'll do what I can to help you get back in the air.

Thanks Deke. You would think by looking at these ignition units that it
would impossible to get water into them but I think it may have entered via
the wiring. Im told wiring can act like a drinking straw and literally such
water in. I dont know if this is right but it sound feasable. What ever it
is its put me out of the air again. I'll check with stratus. Clem also
suggested the subaru list would be worth contacting (thanks Clem). I'll drop
them a line also.

All the parts are off 90-99 Ford Laza, Mazda 323 or Nissan Sentra as known
here in New Zealand. I'm sure you would have similar models in the US,
perhaps diff names but the engine is in the 1500 - 2000cc range. Components
made by Mitubishi Electrics. I can send you more shots if you like, I
replaced the Sub dist base plate with a fabricated a new plate and fitted
the the trigger coils onto it. Used the std sub reluctor with a bit of
modification. Works super well.
