"The wing struts will need new ends put on them, as i found cracks going through the bolt holes, this makes the plane nonairworthy until properly fixed. "
Oh my gawd, I wonder how that happened.... Thats really a bad part to have cracking

One difference between the Ultrastars and later Kolb models is that Ultrastars could be built from plans. That means that much more of the quality of the plane is determined by the original builder. My guess is that the builder formed the strut ends, and didn't do them properly.

Hi All,
does that mean that there is no system of inspection during the building of
a plane from kit or plans?. If there is, how did an item like that get
passed?
We may be more `controlled` by authority here than in the US but the
chances of such a thing happening here during building are minimal.
It is not impossible for things to go wrong as we have a bad case here at
the moment where a weightshift crashed killing pilot and passenger
apparently as the result of a botched repair, wrong rivets used etc.,. It
would seem that a proper check of the repair was not carried out. The
chances of such a botch being made actually during building and not being
detected are very , very small indeed.
cheers

Having built an UltraStar, I would say that the cracks in the struts come from mishandling after construction. Struts can be twisted badly during wing foldings or dissemble. Careless side movement before the pins are pulled can cause cracks. A number of careless actions can cause them. That type of builder and flyer who doesn't understand and practice the proper discipline can be a menace in a lot of ways.
