Has anyone else received a recent phone call supposedly from the AOPA asking for a donation? Often citing the AOPA's around the country seminars and on-line courses as expensive undertakings needing financial support, it all sounded so proper until "Brian" asked me to provide him with my credit card number so he could process my donation with a minimum of hassle. When I declined and instead suggested he send the donation request via snail mail, "Brian" expressed a sense of urgency and said my donation should be received by the AOPA no later than Sept. 5 and he would send out the donation letter immediately. That was several days ago. For being in such a rush, I wonder why I have yet to receive an official request from the AOPA. Being cynical by nature, I have to wonder if the phone call was a legitimate request or just another sophisticated attempt by bottom feeders to prey upon the unwary? With the Labor Day weekend upon us, my attempts at contacting the AOPA by telephone for confirmation have proved fruitless.

Has to have your credit card number NOW.

That is a scam.

I made a donation to AOPA several years ago. So now I'm on their "this guy gives money" list. They call about twice a year now, but they have never asked for my credit card number. It's always been by snail mail. My wife is always giving money to a lot of charities, so she gets tons of calls asking for donations now. Ya' have to watch about getting on one of those "this person gives money" lists.

I got a call yesterday, as a matter of fact. The lady was doing a great job of explaining the safety foundation. I asked the lady to cut to the chase (knew it was asking for a donation) and finally just declined. Don't know if it's legitimate or not. I typically don't do solicitations over the phone, and never if it's a cold call.

Rick,
I had received a similar call about 6 months ago, but I do not believe that it got to the part about requesting a credit card.

I used to get ASF calls until I signed up for the “do-not-call” list. Now I just get the ASF mailings. Which is fine with me since I send them a check they don’t have to pay any money to whatever company they use for phone solicitation, and the credit card company doesn’t take a cut of the action.

The ASF is a tremendous organization and their online “courses” are fantastic and deserve my support. Plus I like the free calendar and mailing labels they send me.

They have one up there now on “runway safety.” Which would’ve come in handy this week for at least one air crew.
