I am a new Kitfox owner, and need some advice.
I have the wings off my Fox for recovering, and since the engine hasn't been started in over a year, I deceided to start it before I put on the wings...The header tank was about 1/2 full, so I felt there was plenty of gas to start up and see how it was running.
I could not get the engine to fire...Can I start the engine with the wings off, and the total fuel system not on line, just using the header tank?
What do you think I am doing wrong, and better yet, you might give me a short step by step check list.
Thanks so much for your time in this matter.
Safe flying.

What I did, was use a 5 gal fuel can, ran the fuel line from the fuel pump
to the can direct feed, ran the engine with no problem. You can also run
from header tank, you will only have about 1 gal to work with.

Old gas is bad gas. Drain all of the fuel lines and use fresh gas either from a 5 gallon can like Ray or the header. Also, your carbs might be gummed up from the varnished gas. You might have to disassemble the Bings, clean and reassemble/readjust.

Hi Howard
You can start the engine with the wings off, but you can't go flying (Ha! Ha!)
Clean and fresh fuel in the header tank has been suggested.
I would disconnect the battery 'cause you do not have history of how the aircraft was assembled and you do not want to start the motor accidentally.
So' battery disconnect, Make sure the fuel valve is open, this valve is between the header and the fuel pump. Should be somewhere under the instrument panel.
Pull the prop through a couple of times (only to the left-direction of normal spin).
There should be a fuel filter near the mechanical fuel pump. If this is glass or clear, you should be able to see fuel movement. But this is not enough fuel pump action to get the fuel to the carburetors.
If you do not have the opportunity to see the fuel. I suggest you remove the fuel line to the pump and apply some compressed air to the header to make sure fuel has the ability to arrive at the pump, every thing ok. connect the hose
Having charged the battery, hook up and then pull the throttle to you, you want it closed. Activate the choke out all the way and turn the key. If this will not start it after a couple of attempts, then remove a spark plug or two and check for fuel. If they are as dry as a bone, then fuel is not getting there.
If they are soaking wet then it could be an electrical problem.
But you do want a good strong battery. No throttle and full choke during this starting attempt.
PS. Make sure the airplane is secure. Because if you are lucky and the 912 comes alive, you do not need to be high speed taxiing at this time.
Talking about being lucky, when it starts, fiddle with the choke and throttle. The engine likes about 2000 to 2300 rpm during the warm up.
All the best. Eric. Atlanta

The "head" of the fuel in the wings provides needed fuel pressure. It is not likely that you would get a start or successful run unless there is an electric fuel pump to support fuel flow.

The mechanical pump on the engine should support
running without gravity shouldn't it? I've run mine
before without tanks...
