I'm getting ready to drill the holes in my Vetterman exhaust for
installation of the Dynon supplied EGT probes. The intake tubes eliminate
positioning the probes pointing directly rearward so some offset is needed.
What is the desired positioning of the probe, ie., probe pointing outside of
the intake tubes or inside the intake tube. My thoughts are to go inside of
the tubes, making a cleaning wire run to the thermocouple harness wires.
Any thoughts, pics or other ideas?
Also, on my exhaust the #1 exhaust has a elbow bend about 2" below the
flange. To position the probe on a flap spot I have to go past the bend.
The distance brings the other three probes right at the intersection points
of the joints. If they are within say, two inches of #1 but 2,3 & 4 are the
same distance surely I won't have a noticable difference in actual EGT
between #1 and the other 3. Care to comment??

Dana:
The EGT is only a reference item. So as long as you keep the reference the
same on all probes you will do OK. What is meant by reference is that when
comparing to other peoples systems the readings will vary. Just try to keep the
probe location as uniform as posable on your system. Yes, 1 & 2" differences
will be noticed. Also difference will be noted between cylinders especially
on Lycoming engines that are carboratored since the spider distribution system
is extremely poor.

FWIW I placed my #1 EGT probe just above the bend in the Vettermann exhaust, also on an O-360A1A BTW, which put it just about 2 inches down from the exhaust port and located the others at the same distance. All the probes point aft and slightly outboard to provide clearance for removing plugs. This has worked out very well for me so far. I believe you will get more useful information relative to engine performance if the probes are located
the same distance from the exhaust ports.
