Hi,
Any ideas on solutions for a run-on engine issue?
This is for a 912 engine, usually running on 91 Mogas, that tended
to run some seconds after shutdown, during operations this summer.
The run-on is intermittent so it really shakes the engine and is
clearly not a good thing.
I've only seen a little bit in the archives about the issue.
Topics that had come up, for different engine types:
- too hot
- combustion deposits (hot spots)
- poor fuel quality, or old fuel
- timing too advanced
- carbs need cleaning, eg, dirt under needle.
Ways to deal with it were suggested:
- reduce idle speed
- idle longer before shutoff to cool engine
- use choke on shutdown (too little air for it to run)
- ignition off, throttle wide open (too much air for it to run)

Peter--
One other suggestion in the archieves was to turn off one mag before
shutting down to reduce the shaking.

Hi Peter
Could you shut the fuel off and stall the engine until you find
out what the runon is caused by. There may be less shaking
of the engine using this method.
A bad helicoil job to fix a messed up spark plug thread can cause this.
Also dirty spark plugs.

Hello Peter,
Here is a first hand comment, has worked for all the 912 ans 912S engines in our Club for years, even before the "cluch" in the reduction.
Side note: Do you refer as run-on what is also known as "Dieseling" (engine continues running with the switch off)?
We are located at 5,000 ft ASL and hot in summer.
We have the engines (912 and 912S) set to idle at 2,000 rpm. to shut down the engine, we use this simple rutine:
Once the engine is in idle ready to shut down, we rev it up to 3,500 and at the same time we "off" the key and pull the gas to idle. The engine normal shaking is close to cero. Is important to practice the timing. Soon will be a natural procedure.
Keeping the engine tune up (timing and good plugs (at) 25 or most 50 hrs), will not "Diesel" when shut down.
Hope this helps.
