I'm at this stage now. How does one put these things together if I don't choose to buy that tool?

These help if you want to spend the money:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/koultool.php, AS&S part number
12-01061, $73.95
http://www.koultools.com/ for a video of them in action.

Carefully Smile

The pain is that after you cut the lines the metal strands that make up the jacket can fray. So when you go to insert the hose into the fitting's nut/collar the strands don't want to go inside. All the Koul Tools' kit does is create a funnel that directs the hose and jacket into the fitting.

Two things help assembly:

- wrap the hose in tape and cut the hose in the middle of the tape to prevent the jacket from fraying in the first place. Use an abrasive cut-off wheel to make the cut.
- if you do have loose strands, help them into the fitting's collar with a small flat screwdriver. Work your way around the collar, gently pushing in a few strands at a time before you seat the hose the entire way.

Here is a page that gives a tutorial: http://www.goodvibesracing.com/XRP%20Hose%20Assembly.htm
