To start I flew three hours today. That's pretty good, considering my
back's blown out and it's hotter'n heck here. For the first time I flew
east over the mountains to the desert. As the wind at Ramona was 10-15 I
expected a lot of turbulence over the mountains but found little. I think
the wind was too far north.
Once I dropped into the desert things got a little bumpy, but no so much
that it bothered "10000 Maniacs" playing on the Ipod. I spotted the field
from about 10 miles out, my first dirt strip! When I arrived I found the
wind to be about 20-25, and about 45 degrees off any runway heading. It
made for a really interesting pattern, with crab angles of 30 degrees plus.
On final I set up for landing with my left wing so low I was worried it
would drag. Of course, once in ground effect everything relaxed and some
quick footwork kept things straight and level. Taxiing was fun, though, and
once my right wing lifted and I just sat there with it flying for a few
seconds until the aileron carefully set it back down. I thought I might get
out for an ice cream at the little store across the street, but decided
that if I got out the plane might just fly away. After letting things cool
a bit I taxied out and took off across the runway. With no flaps I probably
had a 50' roll.
The way home was into the wind, so I made use of some good ridge lift to
climb the 6500' required to clear the mountains back into San Diego. All in
all a beautiful day. Some day, when I get high speed access, I'll send
pictures.
Only 17 hours to go.

Hello Guy.
So' a little over half way throo your 40 hours.
Kind of frustrating the first 40, but a good regulation, for safety sake!
But you say your destination was over the mountain. Kind of rough terrain to be over during the teething time.
My three destinations that were provided were kind of close to my home airport with just one under the Atlanta veil. So' only sometimes a little scary when I look up through the roof and see the big stuff on base.
I guess you immediate area is mountainous? that should make for real nice scenery on a clear day!
From your description, with those cross winds, you are definitely gaining Fox experience and some sail plane technique (it looks) from your... "so I made use of some good ridge lift to climb the 6500' required to clear the mountains back into San Diego".
Isn't this the time of year that you folks get a little wind blowing to the west from the deserts?
Anyway. Thanks for the story of your experience,
Eric.

Nice story, Guy. I can imagine you and your Kitfox, in the desert dusty wind, just sitting there and longing for that ice-cream. You should have grabbed your cell phone, call for a home delivery pizza and ask the driver to grab an ice-cream on its way!
Cheers,
Michel

It is, but most of the teething's done. Also, I fly high and pick landing
spots along the way. I know it's not as safe as I could be, but I just got
too bored circling above the field and it's mountains everywhere else.

We had a Santa Ana just last week. Not much on the ground, but about 15 -
25 above the field. The problem was that the wind on the ground kept
switching east/west so at one point I had to swap ends on the field to take
off.
