Hi ! Guys,
my MKIV has MC-1 Matco Mfg master cylinders like I suspect most Kitfox's do. My cylinders also have dust boots but Matco can't supply these and in fact tell me they were not supplied for the last twelve months of production. I think this is very poor as the cylinder is right in front of the sole of your shoe just wating for dirt to drop onto the reservoir top plate and work it's way down the shaft as their is no seal at this point, See Master Cylinder diagram on Matco Mfg website. www.matcomfg.com go to Technical Support then Master Cylinder etc etc. In the middle of the page about half way down you can see a diagram of the MC-1 master cylinder. Click on this to enlarge and you'll see the MC-12300 dust boot. You can get rebuild kits but no boot is included or available from Matco.
My dust boots have got very sticky either with age or perhaps due to using Mil-5606 fluid. I am not sure which but I know they use Buna-N "O" rings to live with this fluid so perhaps the boots were not Buna-N.
Anyway due the boots being sticky I have eventually poked a hole in both of them trying to get them pushed out straight again after checking the fluid. So I need new boots. I suspect I'm not the only one and it appears some don't even have any boots at all.
Well what I have done is approach Don James at JBM Industries. They are the guys that make those replacement carby sockets for the Rotax motors that don't crack like the originals. Anyway JBM don't make these boots at this time but it looks like they may well do if they can when I send them a sample. I'll let you know if this happens as I suspect it will. Then if any of you just want boots in the first place or to replace sticky or damaged ones you will then know you can do that.
