Just saw this on another list:
Per MIL-STD-403C (the revision level of the paper copy [he has]) para
5.2.7.5:
"Marring of the manufactured head. A cut or ring caused by the riveting
equipment shall be acceptable on non-flush rivets providing the depth of
the cut is not greater than one-fourth of the head height. Cut or ringed
flush rivets shall not be acceptable."
Anybody who's familiar with either mil-spec standards or FAA 'best practices' that knows whether this is valid? I'm not advocating sloppy work, but I can remember drilling out a few 1/8" rivets due to minor errors with the universal set & making a bigger problem when I did it. If the quote above is accurate, I'd bet there are quite a few projects out there that would be better off carrying around a few 'smiles'.

I can't quote mil specs or FAA regs while I'm at work because I don't have
them in front of me, but I do know that the Aircraft Structural Technician
book that I bought from Cleaveland Tool says roughly the same thing. There
are some pretty interesting pictures about how the shop heads should look
and smiles on the manufactured head and what is acceptable or not.
Quite frankly I was surprised at what was shown to be acceptable. I too
have fallen into the trap of trying to drill out rivets that would have been
acceptable by this standard and in the process, created other problems.

Charlie I remember reading a test on rivet strength. On pull test an ugly
nail looking or a universal head was 9\0% as strong as a beautiful one. And
lest we forget there is another rivet 1.5" down the road.
