Kolb Friends -
Here's a first for me: I just had my first biennial flight review in my
OWN airplane! I was able to do this, as only this year (in Jan) I
finally achieved 40 hours on my Kolb, and may now carry a passenger.
Flying along as an "observer," my instructor had me put the plane thru
all the usual BFR kinds of maneuvers - stalls, coordination maneuvers,
and even unusual attitudes. Then we did a bunch of takeoffs and
landings. (I learned that I need to carry a bit more power when doing
full flap landings with a passenger, if I don't wish to splay my landing
gear again!) We flew 1.2 hours that day; very satisfying!
The best part of it all was hearing my instructor thru the intercom,
going "Yee-haa" with very take off. It was obvious that, being
accustomed to instructing in general aviation aircraft (like 172s and
Cherokees), my instructor was fair amazed at the climb rate of a Kolb!
Especially here in central New Mexico, where airfield elevations are
above 6000 feet, and where most GA planes perform like old dogs!
