Can anyone give me some help with batteries? I've just priced up a
17AH 'Red Top' at 121 GBP. I can get hold of YUASA 17AH leads acid
gel batteries for 37GBP. THe only obvious difference to me is that
the Red Top product claims 625A cranking power at 20 degC and the
YUASA 450A. Would this lower power be enough for cranking the 914 or
am I missing another reason for spending an extra 100 quid?

Regards

Paul

Paul,

A small four years old Hawker 7 Ah SBS-8 has ample power to lawlessly
crank our Rotax 914. I tested it from -14°C to +37°C.
The advertised cranking power is circa 300-400 A. The Rotax starter
doesn't exceed one hundred peak amps.
So I believe there is no need to worry.

If it were my airplane, I would go for a smaller and lighter battery.
I believe that the Yuasa battery is rather of the Absorbed Glass Mat, or
Recombinant Gas type, and not of the gel model. Gel batteries are best
suited for traction (wheel chairs, fork lifts, etc...)
If you're not afraid of reading French, you'll find some info on AGM
batteries at
http://contrails.free.fr/elec_bat_rg.php
Hope this helps,

Hi Paul

We fitted an Odyssey PC680 which I got from
http://www.tayna.co.uk/catalog/295/0/Enersys-ODYSSEY-Batteries-Enersys-ODYSSEY-Batteries-page1.html

which was the cheapest outlet at the time at £80 - Seems to work a treat
(and about 6lbs lighter than the battery we took out.

Regards

Peter

Hi! Paul , I can't help you with technical comparisons but having the
Jabiru 3300 (it has six cylinders so two are coming on compression
together) and with two 13 AH red tops in parallel they have worked
flawlessly for in excess of six years and even with very negative temps
gave an immediate "light up" every time.
I always had to fly for up to an hour to be fully charged though and
after 3 starts within one hour it could need a second attempt.
All this was after it was necessary to perform jump starts from a plant
battery during the test flying. After which I moved the battery location
from the back to the P1 Foot well with welding wire leads.
Red Tops profess to be "starter" batteries so they give a remarkably
instantaneous discharge as is required for the starter.

I highly agree. I am very happy with my Odyssey.
It is over one year old and only once charged.
I have played almost every night with my panel...
The voltage over pins stays always 12,68V
(just like advertised). Notice never cranked /flied so far.

??? Respectfully Bob, I don't think that statement is correct.

Six cylinder engines have a compression event every 120 degrees of rotation
of the crankshaft whereas a four cylinder has one every 180 degrees.

IOW, your Jab 6 cyl has 3 compressions per revolution and the Rotax has 2.

I assume the pistons in the 6 cyl Jab are larger in diameter than the Rotax
engines.(hence larger top surface area) If this is so, this could also
contribute to the 6 cyl Jab being harder to turn over than the Rotax subject
to the their relative compression ratios of course.

Cheers
Kingsley

Hi! Kingsley
Yes of course I understand the compressions sequences re. four stroke
six cylinder versus 4 cylinder but the point I make is also contained in
your own statement .....that when the current compression cylinder is
being pushed over top dead centre there is also one soon following it's
compression stroke on the six configuration needing more effort from the
starter to get up the required momentum for the following compressions.
All very relevant ....well in the early stages when the compressions are
half decent ! That's why the six sounds like a sewing machine.

It's just a shame the torque produced at the end of all that activity
isn't so precisely described by the manufacturers in comparison with
other engines of half the cubic capacity .....difference between
Australian Ponies and real time Horses !

Regards
Bob Harrison G-PTAG (waiting for the ultimate comparison!)
