Wing Jig?

Hello again -

Thanks for the responses to my issues surrounding the bow in my rear wing
spar. I received many good suggestions. The most important may have been
to make sure the main spar was not bowed as well. It was - *I think.*
Anyway, this investigation has led me to the conclusion that it might be
best if I can build a jig on my table to which I can clamp the main spar -
and perhaps the rear spar as well. Obviously it is not sufficient for me
right now to just have everything sitting on steel beams. (I don't know
whether it matters or not, but I bought the wing kit from an earlier
builder, and the unopened crate had just been sitting for about two years.)

So, has anyone crafted some type of jig and can you give me advice on how to
build it? Needless to say, it would be nice if it were reversible so that I
can use it for the second wing.

Thanks, Michael

Hi Michael,

I don't have a jig, but I do have a different way to use the
workbench which might help.

I have a wood (particle board) bench with 2x4's on edge going across
the bench. I am not sure how many there are, but it must be around 6
or so. Each one is screwed to the bench and shimmed so the top edges
of all the 2x4's make a level work plane.

I place the wing on the 2x4's and then use blocks screwed into the
bench or 2x4's to adjust the location of the wing so it is level and
at the right angle (specified in the drawings) for
construction. After the ribs have been squared the whole thing is
locked in place with blocks again. This keeps it all in a nice rigid
position for attaching skins.

It is all a variation on using steel beams with wood replacing the
steel. The wood is a lot easier to fix in place with screws.

Good luck,

Paul

Michael,

Do you have a set of plans and the construction manual for that kit you bought?

You need them to build it, and study them first, so you dont beguin replacing parts.

The building Jig you need is a straight table... Works for both wings and the fuselage.

Saludos
Gary Gower.

Michael:

Here's a picture of my jig. Just be sure you follow
the directions and keep both spars level as noted in
the assembly manual:

Email me off list if you have any specific questions.

I hope this helps.
