I just got back from a 275.5 statute-mile round trip, which took 2.9
hours. Included was a .4 hr. trip "around the patch" with a friend of
mine. Upon return, I filled the tanks to the rim, like I did just
before leaving. It took 9.5 US gallons. This worked out to 29 mpg, and
3.28 gallons/hour. All figures were via my GPS. I tried to hold to
90mph airspeed, and let the ground speed fall where it may. All speeds
were pretty close whenever I could glance at the gauges...I was pretty
busy flying the plane in the marginal weather....ok weather according
to the FSS. I wonder what weather channel they were watching?

Well, it wasn't the first x-country, just the first since I cut the
flight training/flight examiner "umbilical cord", and the first
out-of-state trip. Yes, I've got two little 6" long heat muffs that
attach to the front exhaust pipes of the Jabiru engine. They seem to
work ok for the present outside temps, but I need to seal up some air
leaks into the cabin before they will be really enough.

Thanks for the info on the heat muff. You mentioned that you were going to
fit some baffles to slow the air down - have you thought about using
stranded Stainless steel (used for kitchen wash scrubbers) I used this on my
582 muffler heater muff and it worked great. It slows down the air and also
heats up itself adding more BTU's.
When you made your muff did you hinge it - if you can send me a Photo off
line that would be great.

Amazing! This is EXACTLY what I did with my Jabiru, last winter, Gary!
I installed a cabin heater, from the muffler, but the air was coming in
too fast and it didn't had the time to warm up. After adding a SS
kitchen scrubber at the cabin's end of the hose, it comes in slower and
warmer.
.. great minds think alike!
Cheers,
Michel

Ooooh, that sounds like a great idea, Gary....photo(s) on the
way...Yes, I hinged it, although the hinge is more of a means of
securing the halves rather than a means of flexing the muff for
installation. What I mean is, I can't put the muff in place with the
two halves hinged together...it won't clear the obstructions. I have to
hold the one half in place, fit the other half to it (around the pipe),
then install the hinge pin, then squeeze the halves together and
install the second hinge pin.

That explains why I didn't think of it, Michel.: ) I spent a half-day
building some internal baffles, and you guys spent a
half-minute...sheeeesh! A great idea! I can't wait to try it out. I
have installed a (temporary) thermocouple lead into the outlet of each
of my heat muffs, and I can read what the air temp is coming out of the
muffs. I can experiment with different types of baffles and learn what
helps the most....guess that's what makes this "Experimental Aircraft"
experimental.
I wonder what copper scrubbers would do? (please, no plastic scrubbers)
Works for radiators...or it did when they still made them that way, and
the coefficient of heat transmission is better than anything else my
"bible" shows other than silver.

If you put your scrubber in the heat muff the air will come out slower and
even hotter.
