Pulsar Friends,
Well my Magnum Dual strobe power supply died. I tried trouble shooting it but without a schematic it was kind of difficult. Using my oscilloscope, I was able to trace that allot of the circuitry appeared to be working, but gave up and then discovered that a replacement unit was $140.
I was never impressed with the light output of the Magnum system so I opted to build another dual flash circuit I showed driving a couple of 1156 LED bulbs about 3 or 4 years back at one of our reunions. That experiment ended up in Bondo Bob's Pulsar.
I finished it all up this weekend and I used two JDM Astar 800 lumen (33 AX-2835 white LED ciips) LED bulbs (about $18 including shipping) in two $4 1156 bulb sockets from the local auto supply to retrofit the existing wing tip strobe. Built the circuit for about $20 (including the most expensive part, $6 for the metal box). The circuit outputs can source a continuous load of 0.6amps and when I tested the LED bulbs I used, either one would draw only a little over 0.4amps. The timer and counter that drives the alternating dual flash, turns on the bulbs exactly 40% of the time so only during that time does the Pulsar's electrical system get a 0.4amp drain or load. The timer is adjustable and I adjusted mine to a relatively slow rate so the LED bulbs have a good on time which provides allot of light energy. I have to believe that I have more than doubled the light energy, and overall brilliance of my wing tip strobes and at the same time taken the near 2amps of the Magnum down to less than 0.2amp average (as well as about a third the size of the power supply/driver enclosure).
Attached are some pictures.

Best regards,
Ronko
