I have a Pulsar III and need to get access to the lower front pilot side. This is where there is a nut for the last attach point of the lower cowl. Originally this was bonded in place during construction before installing the firewall. It is impossible to reach this area from the inside from under the panel due to the rudder pedals and their attachment bracket. I have been think of the best way to make an access panel, either at the lower corner of the firewall or from the lower front slop of the fuselage. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ray,
I had incorporated an access hatch on the top front section of the fuse. this allowed working on rudder pedals , engine mount points.

Thanks Solly. Do you remember where and how big?

I am hoping to not have anything show from the outside. The lower corner would be hidden by the lower cowl as would the firewall access. If  I did the firewall I would make a SS closure cover.

Ray, The best way I found was two access panels, one in the lower right and lower left of the firewall. I attached them with piano hinges and pins. Fit flush and sealed well and allowed the all important access to the underside of the top fuselage cowl and the brake pedal area. If you would like pics I can send them to you. Cheers, Larry N852LW Pulsar III 2200 Jab.

Ray,
I'm new to this site and only put about 10 hrs on plane last fall with test pilot after 3 year rebuild on Pulsar III with only 100 hrs on badly finished aircraft by original builder.
I had the same problem on stbd side and used a rubber type insert with a female threaded insert bonded to the rubber. Only had to enlarge hole so the rubber insert snugly fit in and as the 10-32 cowl screw was tightened it expands the rubber to firmly hold in place. Has remained in place after many removals. If this doesn't work for you,you can always cut an access cover with no harm done. Can try find where I found these if your interested but I believe it was a marine application.
There is no one on Long Island flying a Pulsar and was wondering if you may help with any questions I may have.
Appears you have a Jabiru 3300 but I have some oil cooler issues which may not apply to your application.
Be sure to remove the bonded piece that broke off so as not to interfere with rudder pedal.
Let me know if this helps.
Alan

Found the rubber rivnuts at Mcmaster Carr. Just go to their site and search rubber blind rivet nuts and you'll see what I am talking about.

Ray,
The problems with two holes in the firewall (left and right) is first there's a chance of gas leaks into the cabin and this is a big no no for me. Second I had found that with two holes each is too small to enter both hands into one hole and have both hands fundction.
The hole on the top was something like 9"-10" wide by a good 14" length. It allows for an easy access to everything down inside. Make sure you reinforce the area around the cut out with a good 3 ply layup of 9 Oz. cloth. the corner should be rounded up with a good radius ( no sharp corners).

Ray,
Had to replace a brake cylinder. Engine had been pulled for other reasons. Cut a hole in the fire wall, replaced cylinder, fiber glassed the piece of fire wall back in.
Fire wall now stronger.

Hi,

I know what you are talking about!

I pulled out instrument panel to get clearance to crawl to firewall. And even then you do not have any extra space.

Alan,

Does the rubber well nut afford a good locking feature for the screw?

What are the oil cooler issues your dealing with?

Once the well nuts are screwed down the friction will keep the screw tight. There is no load on the cover so it should not be a problem.

Once the well nuts are screwed down the friction will keep the screw tight. There is no load on the cover so it should not be a problem.

Found the rubber rivnuts at Mcmaster Carr. Just go to their site and search rubber blind rivet nuts and you'll see what I am talking about.

Ray,
Was busy today and couldn't reply but seems the question about the screws coming loose was answered. Never had a problem with the screw coming loose but wouldn't even use a mild loctite as the rubber insert will come loose once the rubber relieves tension and will spin in the hole making it difficult to remove the screw. Note that the flange portion of the insert is not as thin as I would like and the cowling doesn't sit as flush with the fuse as I would like but is not noticeable.
The engine oil cooler is mounted on stbd side on engine mount with about 3" forward of firewall as when I purchased aircraft with no cool air intake. First flights this summer oil temp reached 280. Installed nacal intake in lower cowl with intake shroud on cooler and 2.5" diameter hose into shroud. This decreased temps to max 260,not what I expected. Cooling air exits against firewall and out bottom of cowl. Feel I may have to make exit shroud at cooler with opening at bottom near or at bottom of lower cowl to have air stream draw exiting cooler air out. Maybe air pressure inside cowl is too great and preventing free exit off cooling air from cooler.
Only pics of coolers in Pulsars showed cooler mounts on port side of cowl at main cooling air inlet, but the Pulsar III has no room to mount cooler here and may restrict cooling air for cyl walls/heads. I have the Rotax 912ULS-100HP.
If you or anyone has any info/suggestions I would greatly appreciate before I start fab of exit shroud. Was planning to make shroud out of alum, same as intake shroud or possible fibreglass.
Or possibly I'm going totally in the wrong direction. I have aircraft in my garage with all winter to correct issue along with other small problems revealed with test flights last fall.
Thank you for any replies.
