List
I am in the process of converting my alternator coils from the parallel windings to series in accordance with Jabiru Engineering Report AVDALSR087-2.
My question is - Will I loose amperage by doing this.
In theory the amperage should drop since the resistance of the coils in series will go up from 1.4 to around 1.9.
Hopefully I can still get close to the16 plus amps at a cruise RPM of about 2700.
Has anyone out there tried this and can offer some information??

Bobby:
I had a 12 coil 17A Alt from Jabiru and changed it out to a Rotec 45 A Alt.
I still in the process of adjusting the Mag clearances. The weather had gotten to me.
It's currently a -8 here in Charleston, WV and we still have a foot of snow. The hanger is
unheated. The 17A(at)2700rpm output was not enough for my plane. I exhausted the battery during taxi.
You can't taxi at 2700 rpm.

I will let you know how to correct all that when I acquire the
proper right side magneto for my 2200. Bob Haas N380BH.

Hi Bobbie;
Yes, you will loose amperage.
The basic rule is when you go from parallel circuit to a series circuit. The Voltage will double and the Current will be cut in half.
Two 12 V batteries (at) 10 Amps is series will equal 24 V (at) 10 Amps.
Why? Because each battery can ONLY deliver 10 Amps which is the Max available from any one battery AND you can not pass more current THROUGH a battery than the batter is rated for.
Two 12 V batteries (at) 10 Amps in parallel will deliver 12 V (at) 20 Amps.
Why? Well, 12 Volts is 12 Volts you will not get more than the Max supply voltage of any one battery AND each battery has the ability to supply its Max Current.. 10 Amps, but they BOTH can supply their Max at the same time. There is no limiting factor... Except for the wire size
So, yes, you will loose amperage. What gets me is the VOLTAGE! I guess even though the voltage will increase to double if they are truly in series. They are controlling it through the Voltage Regulator (ACU).
