I have a spare Huosai 285HP engine that has been hydra locked.
Can the bent rod be replaced without removing the engine?
Does the crankshaft have to come out to change the bent rod?

Thanks Kelley

Assuming the HUOSIA is the the same, less horse power than the M14, the answer is yes but it is entertaining unless you pull the crank case free of the supercharger case. The nose case with the reduction gears have to be separated from the crank case. Next will be to pull the thrust gear plate that also drives the prop governor spline shaft. A standard gear puller will not work. You will have to machine a gear puller that will fit the holes in the face of the plate. The puller will have to work on holes that aligned like the times of an isosceles triangle by the way. The Russians wanted to play with your mind. Next comes the cam lobe plates. When you get to this point, you may as well pull the whole engine down, IRAN it, and rebuild it.
Watch your timing alignment marks. They are single line etching on the spline gears. Looking something like this -= where the single etched line lines up with and goes between the two hash marks on female spline gear.
In some cases that etched line will be a single dot on the male spline shaft that aligns between two dots on the female gear. To help relocate them I used a paint pin to highlight them after cleaning the parts in the parts washer. You will have to ask Doug for the Huosai torque settings on the wrist bolts.
You are going to really enjoy the air start lines and the start spider!
For the second time around I sent the engine to Barrett engines in Tulsa.
Good luck,
Doc

I would be very cautious about only changing a connecting rod and hoping that no other damage has been done – it takes a lot of force to bend the connecting rod, and we have seen cracked crankcases; crankshaft halves moving in relation to each other, and other problems. Certainly for any engine that I was going to fly behind, I would want to make sure that everything had been checked!

Richard and Dennis that is why I said "When you get to this point, you may as well pull the whole engine down, IRAN it, and rebuild it." He's going to have the engine pretty well torn down by that point so he may as well IRAN the thing. I agree I would not trust the engine either.
