Cleaning out the rings & ring lands on the 582, it's been a while, and the lower one was stuck on one side near the locator pin, both pistons. Scraped and scraped, looked pretty good, put the rings back in and was not real happy, Still sticking a little bit on that same side. Went to scrape some carbon off the underside of the head and think about it.
Scraped a bit, and then just for the heck of it, shot the head with some PB Blaster. WOW! That stuff dissolves soft carbon like crazy. Let it sit for a while, wiped it off with a paper towel. Went online and researched it, saw some posts where other people had good results, but one post said to keep it away from seals, it can make them swell.
Packed the base of the pistons with shop rags, drenched the rings and piston lands with the stuff, letting it sit overnight. Will post again tomorrow. But I did see dissolving carbon running down the sides of the pistons. That would seem to be a good sign.
But unlike Seafoam, I really don't see putting this stuff in the gas tank.

PB Blaster is the best liquid wrench I've ever used. Breaks loose unbelievably tough rusted bolts and even galled threads.

Let it soak the rings & grooves overnight, helped a little. My conclusion: it works great on soft carbon, not as much on hard carbon, still better than nothing.
OTOH, Seafoam only has one purpose, and if it doesn't clean the carbon off your pistons and rings, it is pointless. PB Blaster works great on loosening rusted stuff even if it doesn't clean the carbon off the rings as good as I wish.

Oven cleaner? I think that is a great idea! Does anybody have an old piston, and the urge for an experiment? The stuff is definitely designed to remove baked on carbon.

For rust, a 50-50 mix of acetone & ATF is pretty impressive (and inexpensive).

Just the opposite of Charlie E's less expensive "stuff" is Kroil by KANO Labs in Nashville, TN. This stuff is expensive, but works better than anything I have tried over the years for loosening stuck stuff.

I think oven cleaner contains caustic soda ( lye). It dissolves
aluminum. Very important to test first. Could test on any piece of
aluminum

For what it's worth. Machinists often have to deal with some nasty situations. At
least this article has some numbers, not just preferences or claims. Saw this
some time ago -
____________________________________________
I read a post on another website that said that an April/May 2007 edition of
Machinist's Workshop did a study on penetrating oils to see which was the best
at freeing rusted hardware. The results are indicated below:
Penetrating oil . Average breakaway load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10
According to this, a 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF was the best. Also,
someone mentioned that "CRC Freeze-Off Super Penetrant" was pretty good
with stuck bolts as the freezing effect tends to crack rusted surfaces.
