Interesting to hear the squelch issues with cig lighter outlet USB chargers. I have two that I have used from Daytona Beach to Reno and back without any squelch issues. It is the Energizer model #PC-1CA. I use one for iPad and one for Stratus.

There are chargers . . . then there are CHARGERS.
Small variances in their design and construction
can influence where any antagonistic
behaviors are noted. Unless the device is
designed to suppress the full spectrum of
input frequencies used by potential victims,
it can emit antagonistic energies in little
pockets located anywhere on the spectrum.
So it's entirely possible to find devices that
don't bother YOUR radios on the frequencies
you use . . .while still being a nuisance
to somebody else.

When qualifying to DO160, and depending on
the criticality level of that qualification,
a device is allowed produce greater, potentially
annoying energies outside the spectrum of 'aviation
interests'. As you can see below, the limit lines
for allowed emissions are reduced over frequency
ranges where important airplane business takes place, and
relaxed elsewhere.

Given that no, commercial off the shelf USB power
adapter will have been so critically evaluated, its
possible to have one that throws tomatoes at ATC
but not Ground Control . . . etc. etc. Even
multiple examples of the same product may demonstrate
different behaviors.

They now have the 4 port ~$190 US Dollars (delivered), and I ordered one of these.
Why you ask would I spend $200 on something I can get for $10 at Walmart?
Noise, noise, and noise.
I've spent thousands of dollars to have quality Comm, and the damn cig lighter chargers wipe all that out with ease. Even kills the FM radio reception.
We'll see if the unit is RF quiet like the guy claims on the website - if it is then it's money well spent.

Hi,

I am the designer and maker of the Charge2 and Charge4 USB chargers mentioned in this tread. A customer let me know about the forum and suggested I register, so I have.

If anyone has questions over the units, please get in touch, I will answer the best I can.

Yes, based in Cambridge, UK.
So given the time difference, there could be delays in replies.

Wow! The "designer and maker" of the product makes himself available to
the list and the subject goes dead. Did I miss something?

Well, I do try and put information up on the website, but still happy to answer questions via the forum or via e-mail (address on the website).

Jeremy.

I think it's indicative of this list that there is a lot of fancy talk, people go on about design criteria, a lot of theorising etc etc, then someone comes along with positive advice from a professional - which puts everyone out on a limb because they know nothing

Gee Whiz, John!

I have a bad day from time to time as well, and it sometimes results in a
post I wish I had kept to myself. Don't worry about it.

That is a very different impression than mine from being on this list
for many years.
Some of us use the shared knowledge and ideas here, make our own
hardware, learn something in the process, and share the result freely
when it seems appropriate...
I never know whose comment might spark a useful thought or lead to a
solution!
