Need your opinions... I've always used Aeroshell 100 straight 50 weight oil. However, the local oil company where I've always bought my oil went out of business. Through another local company I can get the multi viscosity Phillips 20w50, but not sure about using it in a round motor, especially in the hot environment of the SE US. What say you? JB

Philips 25W-60 which is for radial engines.
From the Philips web site:
"X/C 25W-60 Aviation Oil is recommended for use in radial pistonengines and in other aviation piston engines originally designed torun on heavier-grade oils, such as Commercial Grade 120."

My local Sams Club carries the Aeroshell 100. If you have one local ask
them to stock it.

If you go to the Phillips, I'd get 25W60...
It's made for radials.
Some people say the Phillips leaks out of the engine more than the
Aeroshell.
If you search the yak-list with the matronics search engine you'll get a
lot of opinions on this very subject from over many years!

The main consideration with this kind of oil is the temperature extremes that you experience. Ernie's Aeroshell 100 is fine if you live in a stable climate with very little temperature change.
Otherwise Phillips 20-60W Radial Engine Oil is the way to go.

The Phillips designation is actually X/C 25W60.
A quick description of the viscosity identification as some may be confused
by the different numbers: --
The original aviation designation for oil viscosity measurement was given in
Saybolt Universal Seconds or SUS. That is still in use by Shell, Exxon and
others for their traditional oils. E.G. Aeroshell 65, 80, 100 and 120.
Multi-grade aviation oils use the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)
designation system. E.G. Aeroshell 15W50, Phillips X/C 20W50 and 25W60.
Correlation:-- SUS 120 = SAE 60, SUS 100 = SAE 50, SUS 80 = SAE 40.

OK, you've convinced me to switch. However, I still need opinions. I have a case of Aeroshell W100 leftover... What are your thoughts on occasionally mixing a quart in with the Phillips 25w60? JB

Won't hurt a thing.
Let's say you had recently changed the oil and switched to the Philips 25W-60 and you were at an airshow or fly-in that did not have anything other than Aeroshell 100 and you needed a quart or two of oil. Would you add 1 or 2 qts of the Aeroshell 100 or go without it?
I think you'd add it. I certainly would.

Me personally I do not like to 25w60 and only use 100 or 120. I have found that using 25w60 in my engine I get oil leaks. I know that sounds sort of silly but I do. Having said that I operate mostly (99%) of the time in a Florida climatic condition. In the winter months I use 100. Just recently the foundation I fly the B24 for has gone from multi grade to straight 100w. When you are talking gallons the $$$$ mount.
Mixing. You can mix grades in a pinch. I have put 25w60 in my tank when the FBO didn't have any 100 or 120. Just don't make it a habit. The real No/No is if you are using a mineral oil for normal operations and mix in a detergent oil SEA 100 or 120. IF you are using a detergent oil for normal operations you can mix in a quart or two of a mineral oil if that is all a FBO has to keep you going. Do not however make a habit of it.
Change your oil often. With a 10 micro filter, I change mine between 40 and 50 hours. That may seem long to some, but I find the oil surprising clean even at those times. A pre-oiler is the best investment.
I am not an expert on engine lubrication, and merely go on experience and advice from old timers, so I do respect differences of opinions here. I also note that "hap" is some times the epitome of success.

OK, you've convinced me to switch. However, I still need opinions. I have a case of Aeroshell W100 leftover... What are your thoughts on occasionally mixing a quart in with the Phillips 25w60? JB

JB

Jon,
Before you switch, keep in mind we live in the tropics and operate our birds mostly in very hot weather. I ran the Phillips in my previous CJ And now run Aeroshell in the new one. I've found that I have much less oil accumulation in my lower cylinders with the Aeroshell.
Obviously this is purely anecdotal, since there are many other factors at play, but you have to ask yourself, do you need the multi weight capabilities based on the average temps you fly in? The same capabilities that allow the oil to flow in freezing temps, allow it to flow past your rings in a 90 degree hangar.
Just a thought.

I think you'd add it. I certainly would.

Ernie,
As a side note, if my 52 is going to sit for awhile I drain the supple into a catch tank. I leave the sump poem with a she from it to a 5 gal. Gas can. The 50's engine is still pickled.

JB
