I am trying to figure out how to place a fuel filter in a metal fuel line. I will need to cut and flair the metal line and then connect the fuel filter with rubber hose and clamps. My question is this, what type of flair do I need to place/make in the metal fuel line to accept rubber fuel hose? I can make a standard flair used in metal to metal connections but I think this would be too sharp for rubber hose? I need something like a small bubble flair but I'm not sure how to go about this.

You'll need to borrow what's called a "beading" tool that puts that nice bump inboard of the end of the line, like you see on automotive radiator hard lines. You don't want to use a flare tool as you'll never get the hose on and it will cut the hose eventually if you do. Unfortunately beading tools are hideously expensive so you'll have to beg one of the local A&P's to do it for you or to let you borrow their tool. (I did find a place that rents aircraft tools:  www.hangartoolbox.com.) It might be easier to buy flare fittings from Summit racing or Jegs and use a flare tool (cheap) to put on flare transitions to barb. Then use hose to go from your new barb fittings to your filter. (Or you can buy really nice flare fuel filters from Summit or Jegs, that's what I used.)

Thanks Guy
You pointed me in the right direction. My local aviation shop was able to put a bead on my fuel line in about ten minutes. Your comments were a big help, thanks.
