For those of us with android devices there is Avare ..... and the cost is reasonable.  How does 'free' sound?  It does everything my AnyWhereMap does with the exception of GLS approaches.  It's my backup since I have lifetime IFR/VFR subscriptions with AWM.
It's written by volunteers and will always be free ..... no 30 day trial periods!!!

[quote] I fall into that later category.    I went with WingX because of their support for integration with my Navwork adsb.   With that said, I tend not to use my iPad during flight because everything I need in on the efis.   The iPad is truly a backup device for me.

I have a Bonanza owning acquaintance who swears by Flightplan Go. Some prefer WingX Pro because it supports multiple brand of ADSB receivers/attitude sensors, instead of the one brand approach of Foreflight.

Hi

A few weeks ago I asked about what people are using as an EFB in the front office. My IFR refresher instructor was using foreflight etc. The downside of this is that it is quite spendy for Canadian and US data.

On a recent trip out east, I used Fltplan GO on an IPAD 2 (no GPS) and found  it to be very useful although a bit slow when swapping screens. I had all the US data I needed even though it wasn't GEOREF'd due to the lack of a GPS receiver. The *free* price was a bonus.

Today I got a new IPAD Air 2 which has a GPS and a much faster processor. I was able to download all the maps / procedures etc for Canada and the US. It also displays wx etc.

I don't have much experience with Foreflight but am wondering what the advantages of Foreflight are when compared to FltPlan GO. It would seem that free maps, procedures etc would be a hard combination to beat.

Any opinions?

Cheers

Les

An additional note on the android side of things: With the exception of
the brief month where FlightPro was under legal dispute, I've been very
happy with my Nexus 9, Flight Pro, and an XGPS-170 ADS-B receiver. The
combination is probably half the price an iPad + ForeFlight + Stratus.
I've used the foreflight/stratus combination and was perfectly happy
with it, but I don't want to buy hardware/software that's exclusive to
each other. I'd rate android/flightpro/xgps170 as about 90% as good as
the foreflight solution. Foreflight is better at some things, but there
are perfectly good android alternatives. I think Avare is usable, but
nowhere near as polished as the other $$ Android apps. I'm glad it
exists for free, and I keep it around as a backup.

For what it's worth, I'm using it in a Cessna 182 with 1966 avionics
while I build the RV-10, so I can't comment on how well it integrates
with a modern EFIS.
