I am considering purchasing a Mark 3 Xtra with a Jabiru 2200 engine. I am concerned about cooling that engine as a pusher. Please let me know if you have any experience, positive or negative, regarding a Jabiru engine, especially regarding any cooling issues.
Thanks,
Dee

2200 seems to be OK on a pusher. My MK -3 C has over 900 hrs and head temps show less than
300 cruising at 70 and 2700rpm but I do have a good fairing.

Dee, I own a M3X with. Kolb 2200 engine. It cool with no problems at all. I've read a lot about the cooling problems with that engine but it's always been sensitive to the engine cowls around it. As an exposed pusher it cools fine. The only problem I ever had was when I installed a BRS (ballistic parachute). I installed the VLS and it disrupted the flow of air to the Cylinder Heads. I removed it and installed the canister BRS and the problem was solved. The folks at BRS were great to work with on that project. I prefer the Kolb over the 912 because it's direct drive off the crank just like a Cessna. I like looking at my TAC and seeing 2600 RPM.

Be in a GA pilot I like the low RPM also. Do you find adequate power for take off and climb with your jab? Dee LeBlanc

Jabiru rates it at 80 HP but says its really closer to 90. At 900' MSL I can take off with two 200 lb guys in 300' of runway and set the VSI at 1300' per min. Cruise speed is nothing to brag about but performance is great.

What type of prop is best for the 2200 engine? I've heard several who like or have a wooden prop. I wonder what would be the best composite prop for a jabiru 2200? Does this engine require a certain prop mass (weight) in order to operate smoothly with this engine? Dee LeBlanc

Dee,early on the Jabiru had some harmonic issues that caused flywheel s to loosen. They increased from 1/4 bolts to 5/16 and also added dowel pins at the flywheel attach point. They determined using a wood or wood core prop solved the problem. Prince makes a wood core carbon fiber prop for the Jabiru 2200. I have a Sensenich wood on mine and a Pronce for a spare.
