To the experts out there who have knowledge of fuel lines and material quality, I would like your opinion on the following tubing.
It is rated at 10 bar, has no internal reinforcing but has a cotton over-braiding. In theory it is more than adequate for the job as I have a pressure regulator limiting to 2.3 psi but I would like to have your ideas on this product please?

Fuel hose compatibility is a minefield since they introduced ethanol into
Mogas. The hose you are looking at seems to meet the basic standard of DIN
73379-B, which is nearly equivalent to the American SAE J30R7 hose. This
was OK in the past but now I would use SAE J30R9 or DIN 73379-3D hose which
is specifically recommended for fuels with ethanol in it. The only problem
with this stuff is that it is normally spec'd for fuel injection (high
pressure) hose so it is much stiffer and harder to get on the connection
barbs.

Salut John

I'm not sure when DIN 73379 was introduced, but it may have been before
ethanol was incorporated into fuel (and might not therefore guarantee
compatibility), certainly ethanol does react with some synthetic rubbers.
As a subject that is close to my heart, I have collected some
informative documents (credits in documents), two of which I attach FYI.

May I throw my penny's worth into this conversation, not about the technical
stuff (I leave that to Nigel), but on sourcing the pipes.
As it happens I have ordered a new kit of parts for the fuel and sight
guages from Europa direct. Karen has given me a price which is not
unreasonable and for less than £90 (approx 135 euros) the whole kit is
available. I did suggest that with the LAA Rally coming up this might be an
opportunity for bulk ordering in order to get the price down, saving on
postage etc. So anyone in the market for new fuel pipes and sight lines let
me know so that I can arrange some packages to be made up.

SAE J30 R6 is designed for Ethanol based fuels and low pressure fuel delivery to Carbs so not as reinforced and easier to work with. Same family as the R9.

It's used in the auto industry for fuel lines. You get short lengths in Halfords.

Jan,

That is Gates 27304 Barricade hose that meets just about every requirement
you could think of. Manufactured to meet the California emission
regulations for low permeability hose. It is very hard to get in the UK and
is expensive. Amazon UK are selling a 24 inch length of 5/16 inch ( 8mm)
for UK£ 6.28 plus postage. The supplier is Hires Auto Parts International
who will sell a 25 feet roll. Probably the best you can get.

Regards

Brian

Brian, yes. The only slight downside (apart from the price) is the
acceptable but not great kink resistance for the larger diameters.

Jan

Hi John,
My aircraft is 15 years/1235 hours old, so I had to replace all fuel hoses twice. I have always used Gates 3225 hose and I always found the 5 years old hoses to be in very good shape, inside and out. Of course I am using Mogas (unleaded 98). These hoses are inexpensive and can be purchased over the counter at any AD (Auto Distribution) store. I am sure there is one not far from your home.
For technical details see:

Best regards
Remi
