To avoid magnetic coupling, Bob Nuckolls recommends separating the “fat”  wires from the “skinny” wires (The AeroElectric Connection, Chapter 16).   The fattest wire penetrating the firewall on my –8 (fwd. battery installation)  will be the #8 power wire from the master contactor to the VP-X via the right  side firewall hole and under the F870B Stiffener.  So should I not use the  same routing for the master switch, starter switch, and alternator field  wires?

     I haven't powered anything up, yet, but I'm running everything     through a single hole in my firewall (RV-7, if it matters). Coupling     is greater the more area (distance) the wires run adjacent. Keeping     the heavy power wire separated on both the hot & cold sides of     the firewall *should* keep coupling along the 2-3" as it goes     through the firewall minimal to non-existent. At least that's my     hope in my installation.

     

     If you're running anything unconventional, like electronic fuel     injection or ignition, don't forget that stuff like the injectors or     coil trigger lines can generate short duration but significantly     high peak current pulses that can generate a lot more noise than the     'fat' wire. It's good to keep them somewhat separated from signal     & sensor wires, as well.
